Bushwalking Comfort & Caregiving?

Your preparing for going on a bushwalking pack hike.

To a secluded gorge with supporting 20 teenagers helping 15 Other adults.

Who are all looking forward to the challenge of experiencing a multi day.

Hike through the open bush using maps, compass & personal wits & learned skills –

Days of bushwalking enjoyment & camping comfort!

Taking & carrying all your own:-

  •          food,
  •          water,
  •          cooking equipment,
  •          utensils &
  •          bedding

For the 10 days hike.

As part of preparation –

You get to go to an information day, to answer any questions you may have.

You begin talking with an experienced Bushwalker your mentor, who has been on this same hike with a similar sized group

4 times in the last 12 years .

You talk with your Mentor –

Who says these word.

Besides the standard list

  •          good comfortable walking boots,
  •          plenty of dry socks,
  •          plenty of food & water

Remember to make sure, you have a good bed,

You need to have a good comfortable bed.

So you can get a good nights sleep,

Before you can be of any help to someone else?

Stop for a moment…

& Think about that statement.

Without you having a good comfortable bed, you won’t be able to help anybody else!

You may be thinking/worrying about not having a good nights sleep, moving uncomfortably or whatever else.

Not being able to take care of the other team members needs, when challenges come along.

If we’re not ok, we can’t care for anybody else.

So it’s important as Caregivers to ask yourself 2 questions:-

  1.       Are you ok today?
  2.       What 1 thing can I do today to discover how to be more OK in your life!

Create a great day!

Caregiver’s First Aid – DR ABCD’s

Yesterday we learned the First Aid DR ABCD’s

As Caregiver’s it is easy, to do what comes naturally, not thinking outside the box.

Because you naturally love, your Loved One and want to care for them, giving them the best care possible!

As a Caregiver at home, Informal Caregiver or Family Caregiver, it can be so easy to keep the same perspective, because we don’t want anything to change.

Sometimes, we even put on our rose colored glasses, so nothing changes.

So we don’t always want to see the big picture, of what is coming around the corner.

We often aren’t prepared for what’s ahead.

And sometimes we may do things from a reactive, crisis point of view, not because we are accepting the changes and moving forward proactively.

Changes In Your Loved One and changes in You!

You don’t want to put Yourself & Your Loved One at any risk.

There may not be a dangerous substance on the floor which may be a risk.

It may be a choice you make to feel better.

Or to choose some extra comfort food, or just have an extra drink, or just take an extra tablet (its prescription so it’s ok)

Instead of getting the physical & emotional support you need.

Some addictive substances a caregiver may feel, they need to take to relax or to settle down at the end of the day.

Because Caregivers who don’t care for themselves (not you or you wouldn’t be reading this blog) are more likely to:-

Smoke, binge drinking, be obese, take more then prescribed – prescription drugs.

Some Caregivers give many reasons for their choices – because they can’t sleep. because they don’t feel like they are coping, because they are feeling down or depressed for longer then a few days.

These are some warning signs to take note of when a Caregiver needs to start taking care of the caregiver.

Remember to use the power of choice to give You and Your Loved One the best possible future.

Informal Caregiver to Informed Caregiver?

So what is the difference? Between an Informal Caregiver & an Informed Caregiver?

Skills in Caregiving & Caring for the Care Giver!

All skills in life are learned like:-

  •      Walking,
  •      Holding a pencil,
  •      Colouring,
  •      Reading,
  •      Writing,
  •      Riding a bike or
  •      Driving a car.

And learned skills take time and practice to become capable, often with a few scratches, bumps and bruises to heal or repair.

Who are the Encouragers, Mentors or Coaches Today?

In the good old days, a Caregiver would see how to Care for a Loved One by watching and being encouraged by a family member, mentored by a neighbor or coached by other people around them, as many other family & community members would be doing the same thing, caring for their Loved One.

Today Caregivers often don’t have other family members to encourage them, or neighbors or other people to Mentor them in Caregiving. They don’t see how other people care for their loved ones because caregiving is often hidden away, they stay in their space or room.

When they are at work, it’s often not appropriate to talk about what’s happening at home.

Big Hidden Secret

So Caregiving becomes a big hidden secret.

Which cannot be talked about at work, because it’s unprofessional!

Which cannot be talked about at home, because that’s where it’s all happening!

So Caregivers try to talk to their  friends about this perhaps growing frustrated part of their lives, and their friends can only take so much!

So the Big Hidden Secret – Stays Secret. We are only as well as our deepest secret.

Informal Caregiver Risks

Primary (Main) Caregivers and their families may be in constant Crisis Mode.

Because Caregiving can become this unacceptable, unspoken, unexpressed part of their life.

So an Informal Caregiver can bottle up their emotions of caregiving until they can become stressed, depressed or even burnt out and worst case scenario, may even end up in hospital themselves with caregiver burden, the Loved One who they were caring for, needing to handle change as well as, missing their Caregiver ?

Because the Caregiver had no avenue to express their hurt, anger, frustration or pain and they can implode and then the Critical Caregiver needs Critical Care themselves.

So how can we prevent this from happening?

Great question!

That is what CarefortheCaregiver.org is all about!

5 Ways to Break the Silence!

  1. It’s time to Express how You Feel! No More Secrets! Other people cannot read your mind. You need to Inform other people how you are travelling, even if it is to a stranger. Remember you can also journal your journey.
  2. Take time with your Family to Have a Family Meeting where the Caregivers can sit & talk openly to family who are personally or distantly involved in a safe environment. Based on the latest research family are the “best support” during this time of Caregiving. (Unless you have no close relatives, then connecting with friends & neighbours who can support you at this time.) Scheduling time for You to Care for the Caregiver is Critical Now and in the future!
  3. Get a Care for the Caregiver Mentor/Coach or someone who will take the time to listen to the challenges and be a sounding board for your Caregiver Journey.
  4. Learn Lots and Become an Informed Caregiver become aware, knowledgeable & trained.
  5. Find a Safe Space to express Your emotions & pain, so you don’t bottle it up and implode, so you can stay healthy throughout your caregiving experience.

Create a great day!

P.S. Your Creative!

Are You an Informal Caregiver?

So What is an Informal Caregiver?

Great question!

Lets take a closer look at Informal Caregiver…

A person who is untrained, un-knowledgeable & unaware about Caregiving.

A person who is untrained in the facts, un-knowledgeable in the information, unaware in the results or best practices in care & the skills needed for Caregiving a Care-Receiver (family member or friend) at Home – may be deemed unprofessional because they are Care giving re-actively -making it up as they go or on the fly.

The interesting statistic is there are on average 1 in 5 homes who are Informal Caregiver Homes!

In each of those home is a Caregiver Family, supporting a Loved One/Care-Receiver.

So for every 100 people you walk past at the shops 20 people are currently care giving a relative, or friend Now!

For some strange reason – Informal Caregivers seem ashamed to be seen.

Everything is done alone, out of sight, behind closed doors.

There is no need for anyone to go through this alone and no glory in trying.

When in fact what is required is not just a private sympathy & toleration but a public acknowledgement & proactive assistance.

There is like a silent army of Caregivers swimming in an invisible crowd of Caregivers everyday!

Because No one wants to talk about their Caregiving!

It’s almost a Cultural Challenge.

How Can We be Proud of Care giving!?

How can we stand tall, because we choose to be Caregivers?

How can we speak to others about our lives?

How can we break the silence!?

Well Done You have started!

Remember Transforming from being a Informal Caregiver to an Informed Caregiver starts with You!

Create a Great Day!
