All skills in life are learned like:-
- Holding a pencil,
- Riding a bike or
- Driving a car.
And learned skills take time and practice to become capable, often with a few scratches, bumps and bruises to heal or repair.
Who are the Encouragers, Mentors or Coaches Today?
In the good old days, a Caregiver would see how to Care for a Loved One by watching and being encouraged by a family member, mentored by a neighbor or coached by other people around them, as many other family & community members would be doing the same thing, caring for their Loved One.
Today Caregivers often don’t have other family members to encourage them, or neighbors or other people to Mentor them in Caregiving. They don’t see how other people care for their loved ones because caregiving is often hidden away, they stay in their space or room.
When they are at work, it’s often not appropriate to talk about what’s happening at home.
Big Hidden Secret
So Caregiving becomes a big hidden secret.
Which cannot be talked about at work, because it’s unprofessional!
Which cannot be talked about at home, because that’s where it’s all happening!
So Caregivers try to talk to their friends about this perhaps growing frustrated part of their lives, and their friends can only take so much!
So the Big Hidden Secret – Stays Secret. We are only as well as our deepest secret.
Informal Caregiver Risks
Primary (Main) Caregivers and their families may be in constant Crisis Mode.
Because Caregiving can become this unacceptable, unspoken, unexpressed part of their life.
So an Informal Caregiver can bottle up their emotions of caregiving until they can become stressed, depressed or even burnt out and worst case scenario, may even end up in hospital themselves with caregiver burden, the Loved One who they were caring for, needing to handle change as well as, missing their Caregiver ?
Because the Caregiver had no avenue to express their hurt, anger, frustration or pain and they can implode and then the Critical Caregiver needs Critical Care themselves.

- It’s time to Express how You Feel! No More Secrets! Other people cannot read your mind. You need to Inform other people how you are travelling, even if it is to a stranger. Remember you can also journal your journey.
- Take time with your Family to Have a Family Meeting where the Caregivers can sit & talk openly to family who are personally or distantly involved in a safe environment. Based on the latest research family are the “best support” during this time of Caregiving. (Unless you have no close relatives, then connecting with friends & neighbours who can support you at this time.) Scheduling time for You to Care for the Caregiver is Critical Now and in the future!
- Get a Care for the Caregiver Mentor/Coach or someone who will take the time to listen to the challenges and be a sounding board for your Caregiver Journey.
- Learn Lots and Become an Informed Caregiver become aware, knowledgeable & trained.
- Find a Safe Space to express Your emotions & pain, so you don’t bottle it up and implode, so you can stay healthy throughout your caregiving experience.
