The Caregiver Strength of Calm

Calm is incredible because it will help you to continue, even when you are not getting, the answers you need, to move forward in any direction.

When you are caring and supporting a Loved One,

You may even do superhuman acts, of moving a car of a loved one or

Like getting up in the middle of the night, when you have gotten no sleep at all.

Day after day, month after month, year after year, helping in every way possible.

Calm is often shown in the face of fear

Caregiver Story of Calm

In the middle of a storm, do you stay centered, relaxed, at peace and calm?

I remember running late for an appointment we had waited for over a month for.

I wasn’t as organized like I needed to be that day.

I was sure the traffic wasn’t this bad, the last time, we came this way.

Everything was in warped speed.

We now had to race from the car park to the appointment too.

Some days, you simply can’t get your Loved One to go that fast.

We had to be there it was important!

This was one of the keys to his diagnosis.

When I got to the counter, I was flustered

I was out of breath.

I could hardly speak.

In that moment the Receptionist said.

Just STOP! Catch your breath! It’s ok!

I was then able to give myself permission to do just that.

I regained some composure… and we “made it” to the appointment.

But I never forgot those few words from the Receptionist.

Just STOP! Catch your breath! It’s ok!

Remain Calm in the face of the unknown.

Remember you have the peaceful, the relaxed, composed to see this through!

Caregiver Story of Respect

I have always respected my Loved One.

Although, I saw in a nurse,

A new understanding of respect, which I had never seen before.

It was strange for me to see as a caregiver, because so often,

It seems to be only you who cares for your Loved One.

Even your Doctor & Professional staff addresses you and not your Loved One.

So to see a Nurse, talk with my Loved One who was deaf in one ear and a hearing aid in the other ear, who sometimes found it hard to communicate easily with people.

This nurse put at ease in just a few moments.

Respect, in a heartbeat.

Remember you have the admiration, the deference, reverence  to see this through!

All the different things I was managing.

Preparing My Loved One emotional & physically

Blood Tests.

NIL by mouth for this test.

Travel to find the place for the test.

Food for after the test.

Negotiation of time, energy and resources of my Loved One.

Decoding the seemingly coded messages from the Medical Staff.

Translating this same information to my Loved One and Extended Family.

Waiting for test results, checking on safety & security of my Loved One.

Not to mention, immediate family & work/business needs.

These are the tip of the iceberg.

Heart is often shown in the face of fear

Caregiver Story of Heart

I remember noticing how some Nurses are so sensitive, they seem to almost be able to read their patients minds. This was the experience, I could see, my Dad having, when he was having a brain scan to try and identify what he was suffering from.

Then there are other days and Nurses, where you wonder what reason, they are in the nursing profession? When the person doesn’t seem to show any concern for the patient?  A blood test comes to mind, where you wonder what the last person has said to offend the person or if there were some family/work concerns because they were not in the moment with you or your Loved One?

Although It can be so easy to be a critic and to criticize?

I know some days, it seems to be easy to give to my Loved One from the heart. Other days, I questioned, if I was a good caregiver at all?

The days, I cared for me and kept my Care Tank filled, it seemed to be easier to care for other people, including my Loved one.

I know when I gave to my Loved One from the heart is was through eyes of understanding.

From a completely different perspective their point of view – Love.

Remember you have the sensitivity, the concern, understanding to see this through!
