Caregiver Story of Patience

Have you ever had a question being asked once and you gave the answer, and that is normal communication.

What happens when you are asked the exact same question in the morning and again in the afternoon?

We think the question must have been forgotten.

What about the same question being repeated every hour?

I remember the same question was being asked by my Loved One.

Every 10-15 minutes, Time and time again, over and over the same question or story..

Some days, I would begin to feel a little frustrated. Once or twice, I tried a different answer, to try and feel like I was keeping my sanity.

Yet it didn’t seem to work, my Loved One still repeated the same question, I couldn’t solve this one.

Patience when all else fails…

Remember you have the endurance, persistence, tolerance to see this through!

Caregiver Story of Protection

My Love’s One had caught the train on a Thursday for the last 15 years to see a concert in the city hall, the last thing on my mind was needing protection.

I went to pick my Loved One up from the train station, he was no where to be seen?

Where could he be, he wasn’t on that train or the next train. Was he at another station. I called family, station masters, the city hall, hospitals, we couldn’t find him anywhere.

The city hall had advised there was a man who collapsed, who was taken to the hospital.

I then contacted the hospital again, yet, nobody had been admitted by that name.

I felt guilty, afraid; scared I wasn’t prepared for needing protection, now?

In a few hours I got a call from the hospital. My Loved One was never admitted, just in Emergency.

Remember you have shield, defense, guard to see this through!

Day after day, month after month, year after year, helping in every way possible.

Determination is doing something until it is done.

Caregiver Story of Determination

I never even thought when I accepted Caregiving my Loved One,

 I would ever need determination!

Some days were easy and I loved caring for my Loved One.

Other days were as hard as nails, and I didn’t know which way to turn.

This particular day, was when I was going to take our first respite care, I can understand why only 17% take up the offer.

To give my family and I a little break.

A friend, who worked at a Nursing Home, who asked if I needed some extra rest.

I thought about it and arranged it, to be the next week.

We would need to take a 1 hour car ride, both ways and then face the farewell challenge.

All was going to plan, I thought, I was feeling dreadful for taking a break.

It was like I had to be some kind of spy to get a few moments off.

The hardest part was the phone call from the Nursing home the next day – asking does my Loved One normally knock on the door continuously, trying to get out?

I didn’t need that. Those words broke my heart.

All the emotions just came tumbling out with the tears –

Tired, worried, afraid, scared, anxious, troubled, alarmed, uneasy & upset!

So for my Loved One’s change was not easy and safety a priority.

I used determination to communicate with family members, so they may get a glimpse of understanding.

I needed determination to communicate with (professional) staff.

Remember you have the willpower, the resolve, the purpose to see this through!

When you are caring and supporting a Loved One,

You may even do superhuman acts, of moving a car of a loved one or

Like getting up in the middle of the night, when you have gotten no sleep at all.

Day after day, month after month, year after year, helping in every way possible.

Courage is often shown in the face of fear

Caregiver Story of Courage

I contacted the Alzheimer’s Association, I needed help, I realized my Loved One was showing signs of Stage 1, 2 & 3 with many signs fast approaching Stage 3 which, is scary because there was no Stage 4…

I asked if the Association could help me, they advised, until I get a diagnosis from a Geriatrician they could not help me. I talked about my Loved One’s symptoms, I pleaded for help, I tried to negotiate another option for help.

None of those options were enough for help from the Association.

No one could help me until I had a diagnosis, which involved a long list of things starting with, contacting His local GP. Then waiting for maybe even months for an appointment for a Geriatrician and doing what that specialist needed to do to ascertain the results of my Loved One’s condition.

On that day, I am so glad, I didn’t know what would need to happen. I was looking for a solution and I knew, I needed more help, then anyone was giving me, now. I did not understand anything about my Loved One’s condition. Memory Loss, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Age. There are many possible, reasons, Nor would I until, many years had passed with many lessons, and many more life experiences.

Remember you have the grit, the guts, bravery to see this through!
