Caregiver Stress Part 3

Have you ever looked inside a piano?

The strings behind the 88 keys, which are often hidden inside are tensioned very tight to create, each unique note.

Lets look at a concert pianist, everyday for 8 to 10 hours they play note after note, getting the timing of the concert piece just right even perfect.

Hour after hour, they wrestle with the music, the rests, the notes, the trills…

Yet stop them and a part of them will die inside.

You ask them…

Do you love music? Yes! It is my life!

Do you love the challenge of interpretation? Yes! To give the gift of the composer’s original interpretation!

Do you love the challenge of getting the timing right? Yes! To play is to give a gift!

Do you love the performance? Yes! It is my life to give back!

Is it stressful – At times, some days it can be, but there is nothing, like giving your all, in the performance of the concert of your life!

Stress, is another word for tension. Yet, often we see it as only negative stress.

Without tension, we would not get anything done, no pressure, no deadlines, no goals.

There is positive stress too, which makes us feel good when we are accomplishing tasks, helping others, making friends, connecting with family. Playing the perfect concert.

In caregiving, there can be many positive stressors – you bring skills, knowledge & abilities to caregiving, you can feel good about – Self Esteem, Helping, Appreciation, Caring & Giving Back to your Loved One.

In caregiving, there can be many negative stressors, Physical, Psychological, Emotional, Social and Financial (we will look at these soon in the series).

You have amazing abilities – think about all the things you can do.  That some people in the world, may never have an opportunity to try. You are capable. You are resourceful – you have made it, to today. You are competent – you are willing to try, to give it a go; you show aptitude, you use all your means to make things happen; you use your wherewithal – every part of you to help solve a problem, you are persistent, you are a solution finder – you never, ever give up; you can connect – you can link with other people who understand what you are experiencing; Remember you are enough for this moment of Caregiving.

Even a concert pianist started learning with 5 keys… and they persisted, were encouraged and tried again, and again, until today years later, they can fluently play all 88 keys!
